International Campus AG, the German specialist of student
housing, and the Dutch market leader of student housing, Stichting DUWO, have agreed on a
cooperation. The Dutch Minister for Housing, Stef Blok, was present at today’s signing of the
cooperation agreement by Jan Benschop, CEO of Stichting DUWO, and Rolf Engel, Chairman of the
Supervisory Board of International Campus AG, at the Holland Property Plaza Symposium in
Amsterdam.
Under the cooperation agreement, International Campus will act as investor and co-developer of
the student apartments, while DUWO will be in charge for their subsequent operational
management. Wouter van den Eijnden is the Managing Partner of IC Netherlands B.V., a
subsidiary of International Campus AG, that will finance the initial portfolio of five properties
consisting of 2,250 apartments to be developed in cooperation with DUWO. The two companies
also plan to cooperate in the area of studios for young professionals and postgraduates.
Jan Benschop, CEO of Stichting DUWO: “DUWO’s aim is to create good and affordable housing for
students. If we don’t act now, there will be a shortage of 28,000 student apartments in the
Netherlands by 2020. That is why we are happy about the cooperation with International Campus.
It allows us to build new living space for students and continue to develop our housing concepts.”
Wouter van den Eijnden, Managing Partner of IC Netherlands: “This cooperation with the leading
provider of student living spaces in the Netherlands is very advantageous for both parties. DUWO
is creating urgently needed living space for students, while we will concentrate on financing and
developing innovative apartment buildings for students and studios for young professionals.”
Horst Lieder, CEO of International Campus AG, explained: “The Netherlands is a very attractive
market. The demand for small living spaces will remain high in the long term in a large number of
cities.” Lieder added: “With this cooperation, International Campus will embark on its first
international activity as an investor and developer. This joint venture is an important milestone in
the process of focusing the attention of institutional investors on the asset class of student
accommodation.”
The Netherlands has more than 660,000 students at 13 state universities and 38 technical
universities (as at the end of 2012). In the 2013 academic year around 53,100 young people
embarked on Bachelor’s or Master’s degree courses in the Netherlands.
