International Campus celebrates ground breaking for new THE FIZZ student residence in central Freiburg
- Construction starts on apartment building with around 340 apartments
- 350 bicycle stands, 77 parking spaces in the building’s own underground car park and several community areas
- Completion and opening scheduled for 2020
Together with some 60 guests from public administration, science and politics as well as from the neighbourhood, International Campus celebrated the ground breaking for a new student residence in Freiburg last Friday. By 2020, around 340 fully equipped apartments for students from all around the world are to be constructed in the Herdern district of the city. The apartments will each be equipped with their own kitchenette and a bathroom with a shower. After completion, the student residence with a gross floor area of around 15,200 square metres will be operated under the brand “THE FIZZ”.
“THE FIZZ Freiburg Mitte” on the corner of Habsburger Strasse and Rheinstrasse will consist of two sections with six/seven storeys and will offer 350 bicycle stands, 77 parking spaces in its own underground car park, a central entrance hall with a reception, several communal areas such as a lounge and cooking areas, and a green inner courtyard. The general contractor is Schleith GmbH Baugesellschaft from Überlingen. International Campus is the project developer and will later operate the property.
Horst Lieder, founder and chairman from International Campus, says: “I am delighted that many guests from the neighbouring area in particular accepted our invitation to the ground breaking. The preparations have reached an advanced stage and construction work can now begin. We intend to open THE FIZZ Freiburg in 2020. As before, we will aim to keep the inconvenience for local residents to a minimum.” Lieder explains: “Demand for student
accommodation in Freiburg is at a high level and will remain so for the foreseeable future. For example, the number of international students in this city in the Breisgau region is steadily increasing. Every new student apartment thus helps ease the tense situation on the student accommodation market in this university city.”
In the 2017/2018 winter semester, around 33,000 students from a wide variety of countries were studying in Freiburg. Around 5,000 students came from abroad and roughly 5,500 were in their first semester. Around 1,400 of these students were international freshers. According to the student union, there are a total of 4,844 places in halls of residence in Freiburg.
