International Campus celebrates ground breaking for new THE FIZZ student residence in central Freiburg

• Construc­tion starts on apart­ment building with around 340 apart­ments
• 350 bicycle stands, 77 parking spaces in the building’s own under­ground car park and several commu­nity areas
• Comple­tion and opening scheduled for 2020

‍Together with some 60 guests from public adminis­tra­tion, science and politics as well as from the neigh­bour­hood, Inter­na­tional Campus celebrated the ground breaking for a new student residence in Freiburg last Friday. By 2020, around 340 fully equipped apart­ments for students from all around the world are to be constructed in the Herdern district of the city. The apart­ments will each be equipped with their own kitchenette and a bathroom with a shower. After comple­tion, the student residence with a gross floor area of around 15,200 square metres will be operated under the brand “THE FIZZ”.

“THE FIZZ Freiburg Mitte” on the corner of Habsburger Strasse and Rhein­strasse will consist of two sections with six/seven storeys and will offer 350 bicycle stands, 77 parking spaces in its own under­ground car park, a central entrance hall with a recep­tion, several communal areas such as a lounge and cooking areas, and a green inner courtyard. The general contractor is Schleith GmbH Bauge­sell­schaft from Überlingen. Inter­na­tional Campus is the project developer and will later operate the property.

Horst Lieder, founder and chairman from Inter­na­tional Campus, says: “I am delighted that many guests from the neigh­bou­ring area in parti­cular accepted our invita­tion to the ground breaking. The prepa­ra­tions have reached an advanced stage and construc­tion work can now begin. We intend to open THE FIZZ Freiburg in 2020. As before, we will aim to keep the incon­ve­ni­ence for local residents to a minimum.” Lieder explains: “Demand for student

accom­mo­da­tion in Freiburg is at a high level and will remain so for the foreseeable future. For example, the number of inter­na­tional students in this city in the Breisgau region is steadily incre­asing. Every new student apart­ment thus helps ease the tense situa­tion on the student accom­mo­da­tion market in this univer­sity city.”

In the 2017/2018 winter semester, around 33,000 students from a wide variety of count­ries were studying in Freiburg. Around 5,000 students came from abroad and roughly 5,500 were in their first semester. Around 1,400 of these students were inter­na­tional freshers. Accor­ding to the student union, there are a total of 4,844 places in halls of residence in Freiburg.
