As a rule, more than three out of four first-year students will have begun their degree programs at one of Germany\u2019s 423 higher educa\u00adtion insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, inclu\u00adding univer\u00adsi\u00adties. For this first time, students parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adting in Europe\u2019s Erasmus exchange program will be entitled to higher funding rates when studying in another EU country. Depen\u00adding on the desti\u00adna\u00adtion country, they are paid 600 euros or more each month. On top of that, it is safe to assume that the return to face-to-face teaching and the restored possi\u00adbi\u00adlity to study abroad will ensure the arrival of a large number of domestic and inter\u00adna\u00adtional first-year students in German campus towns. So, the number of first-year students should match last year\u2019s level at the least,\u201d said Michael Stump, the COO of Inter\u00adna\u00adtional Campus Group. \u201cOn the one hand, we are seeing\u2014including in our own houses\u2014the return of inter\u00adcon\u00adti\u00adnental students to German univer\u00adsi\u00adties and other higher educa\u00adtion insti\u00adtu\u00adtions. On the other hand, we expect to see the final catch-up effects of the corona\u00advirus pandemic. Despite the rapid increase in the cost of living, young people want to get their degrees, and they need their own place to stay at their study location.\u201d<\/p>\n \u200d<\/p>\n \u201cThe situa\u00adtion on the housing markets of many German metro regions and univer\u00adsity cities is very strained, meaning more so than it used to be. There is not nearly enough residen\u00adtial accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion, and the volume of student housing that is being developed lags far behind demand \u2013 creating serious issues for young people. Unless supply is expanded, housing and rental costs will just keep going up,\u201d Stump went on to say. \u201cThe lull in German housing construc\u00adtion hits students parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly hard, as they are not among the most well-heeled demand groups. The linge\u00adring uncer\u00adtainty concer\u00adning the future of govern\u00adment funding via the KfW develo\u00adp\u00adment bank is not helpful either as far as the provi\u00adsion of adequate housing for all segments of society goes. Urgent action at all political levels is called for.\u201d<\/p>\n \u200d<\/p>\n \u201cWe hope that the \u2018young living\u2019 action plan on the German federal and state level will move forward quickly, so that it can start simpli\u00adfying and expediting the creation of additional accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion for students and other young people by early 2023,\u201d Stump added.
